NO CELL PHONE USE IN THE LIBRARY!

NO CELL PHONE USE IN THE LIBRARY!

Michael Stephens already blogged this but it deserves another posting. This sign is awful.

My problem isn't with the technology itself, it's with the users (a guns don't kill people, people kill people attitude). I/we at my library limit "no" as much as possible, but after the 20th time of stopping work each day to tell people that they are being rude/disrespectful it gets really old for everyone, and is most definitely counter productive to the overall mission of the institution.

The implementation of technology should not be an excuse for bad manners. Yet technology seems to bring out the worst in people if
public cell phone usage, email, IM/SMS etiquette, and Blog comments are any indication. If most people had even modest levels of manners/respect, and common sense this wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately, a great many people seem to be raised by wolves. The cold detached (often anonymous) environment provided by technology
elicits and promotes much bad behavior from the masses.

I'm a very liberal guy, but after spending a few years in a library environment I understand why laws are necessary to protect people
from themselves... Sadly, some of these laws ruin it for those of us who have common sense, but they are necessary for the greater good so that society can function.

These are some of the issues that make me woeful...
